Personal Statement

I am interested in the verbs of art. I see those verbs employed everywhere, yet we do not connect them to the arts. When I see someone tell a story well, navigate a crowded sidewalk, set a gorgous table for guests, etc, I see the verbs of art. I celebrate these verbs when poured into artistic media because they have made the greatest documents in human history, but I refuse to limit my excitement, my curiosity, my passion to arts media. The world of artistic engagement is too big for our professionally-tight arts disciplines to claim ownership.

Hi Eric,

It's amazing what one can find on the Internet!

I'm delighted that you are (were?) teaching at Juilliard and have had such a varied and satisfying career since I last saw you. But when I first met you nearly 40 years ago at Middlebury, I suspected that you would go far.

I very much want to read your book "The Everyday Work of Art." I'm hoping to return to teaching soon after many years of working in the financial services industry, and from what I've read of your book, I believe it contains many valuable insights that I could put into practice.

You may recall that 27 years ago almost to the day—I think it was late March of 1981—I saw you perform "St. Mark's Gospel" at Christ Church in Greenwich, Connecticut. I was playing a role myself—that of drama critic for The Stamford Advocate. You gave me a free ticket; I gave you a good review. We might have an opportunity for more symbiotic relationships in the future!
