Transit-Oriented Development?

On January 21st, 2008 Lee Crandell says:

I will be out of town during this meeting, but I wish I could attend. I think Lakeview needs more transit-oriented development -- high density development near train stops like this. It would be great if more development were concentrated around train stops, so more people could enjoy the convenience of using transit for their everyday errands.

My only concerns are that the community may require too much parking, encouraging and essentially subsidizing more traffic in the neighborhood; and that the development be oriented toward the sidewalk to create a vibrant public realm. A third of the households in Lakeview don't own a car, so we don't need one parking space for every apartment, particularly when it's right next to a train stop. These kinds of developments are a great opportunity, if done right, to create more pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with more amenities accessible by transit.
